Sorry about that, is a new install, and just never ran into problems before. Reading now 
Probably just fork over the money for the guru install seeing as I can’t figure out my problems with raided hdds.

The oneline (rm -f /srv/rutorrent/home/db/.defaulted.lock || touch /srv/rutorrent/home/db/.smoked.lock && box upgrade && systemctl restart apache2.service
) doesn’t work for me on a fresh ubuntu 16.04 install.
I cleared cache on browser.
I see no error when doing box upgrade. (a small error in bold below)
File .lock is there.
dashboard keeps the defaulted theme.

An update was released earlier that addressed this issue and it was marked as critical. Here is what you can do if you updated during this period.
rm -rf /etc/QuickBox
git clone --recursive https://github.com/QuickBox/QuickBox /etc/QuickBox
then run the following:
bash /etc/QuickBox/packages/system/updateQuickBox
Now finally run the box upgrade command and this should address and fix all issues from this past update.
Here are the two commits that address this error.

How do we tell if we need to run that fix?
Did the upgrade last week, although I am not sure what day it was would it break anything if we ran the fix?
no the fix will not break anything.

fatal: destination path ‘/etc/QuickBox’ already exists and is not an empty directory.
after box upgrade runs it seems, i am pasting the one liner command in first post, just did the steps from this post earlier today https://quickbox.io/qb-source-code-is-moving-to-github/
seems error is unrelated to this theme but to the updating of the repo oops. get the error regardless from box upgrade, although clicking update quickbox on my homepage doesnt give the error
Are you removing the /etc/QuickBox first as I previously suggested? If so, that error will not occur.
JMSolo, i did those 3 commands you listed plus box upgrade but get the same error

@late I just ran those commands:
bash /etc/QuickBox/packages/system/updateQuickBox
followed by box upgrade
There were zero issues.
@JMSolo i dont know how that happens for you, it takes like 3 seconds at the end then the error pops up for me. still getting the error.
Where are you getting the error? Also, you only need to run box upgrade or update from your dashboard. There is no need to run those commands over and over, that was simply to address a potential issue.
when i run the command to add the theme in ssh it gives me the error

Order of commands ran

It also happens when trying to switch to the theme*
It also seems like maybe some of the smoked settings made it through but others didn’t

Was it necessary for you to run those commands as these are only if it is of absolutely necessity? I’m not sure how you guys are getting errors after those commands as I have now had this report from three separate users, logged into all three machines, ran the commands and had no error output. If you like @hyd, please shoot me a PM with your credentials and I will login and look.

but the box upgrade command is what is returning the error
@late, you’re on the ‘Smoked’ theme now. @Hyd, try this method below instead. I am going to update the OP to reflect this.
Tried this instead:
rm -f /srv/rutorrent/home/db/.defaulted.lock && printf "" > /srv/rutorrent/home/db/.smoked.lock && box upgrade
It’s how @Reynald piped the requests… this isn’t Oracle 
Also, that last error… it’s moot… ignore it. I’ll gag it so nobody sees it. Your QuickBox updates regardless. The last error you simple is a simple check to see if the directory exists or not. When it does, it is informing the updater that the path is there… now stop.
